Foundations of Teaching Literacy

In ELEM 331, gain the skills and strategies to confidently teach literacy in the elementary classroom. This course explores the foundations of literacy instruction, covering effective teaching methods, essential materials, and the key factors that influence student learning.

The Importance of Literacy

Literacy is the foundation for learning, helping students understand information, think critically, and communicate effectively. When you build students’ literacy, you give them the confidence to navigate the world and express themselves clearly.

Make Room for Reading

You can promote literacy in your classroom by creating an inviting library that encourages independent reading. Take time to meet with students one-on-one during reading time to support their progress and build their confidence.

What Teaching Literacy Looks Like

Promote literacy by designing engaging lesson plans that build students’ reading and writing skills. By expanding vocabulary and improving reading fluency, you help students become more confident readers.
