FCSE Graduate Program - Option 2


Option 2 - FCS Professional Advancement

This pathway is a program of study for certificated professionals in Family and Consumer Sciences Education who seek professional development and career advancement. This program provides continuing education to maintain and sustain high-quality FCS programs in middle, secondary schools, and other settings.  All coursework are IDEA courses. See the IDEA website for more information and the common tuition rate.


Required Coursework

Graduate Program Core Courses: (39 credits) 

  • CTE 700 - Master's Thesis, Project Study, or Examination (4 credits)
  • GPD 557 - Teaching Family and Consumer Sciences with Technology (5 credits)
  • GPD 560 - Curriculum Development in Family and Consumer Sciences (5 credits)
  • GPD 570 - Evaluation and Assessment in FCS Education Programs (5 credits)
  • GPD 571 - History and Philosophy of Family and Consumer Sciences Education (5 credits)
  • GPD 574 - Research Methods in Family and Consumer Sciences Education (5 credits)
  • GPD 578 - Critical Science Perspectives in Family and Consumer Sciences Education (5 credits)

Select one (1) leadership course from the list below 

  • GPD 573 - Administration in Family and Consumer Sciences Education (5 credits)
  • GPD 576 - Advising FCCLA (5 credits)
  • GPD 577 - Techniques of Supervision in Family and Consumer Sciences Education (5 credits)

Department Approved Electives: (10 credits)

Select two (2) courses from the list below:

  • GPD 552 - Occupational Programs in Family and Consumer Sciences (5 credits)
  • GPD 553 - Exceptional Learners in the Secondary Classroom (Special Education) (5 credits)
  • GPD 554 - Education in Pluralistic Society (Multicultural Education/Human Relations) (5 credits)
  • GPD 555: Psychology of Adolescence for Family and Consumer Sciences Professionals (5 credits)
  • GPD 556 - Adult Learners within Family and Consumer Sciences Field (5 credits)
  • GPD 561 - Public Policy - Family Issues and Social Actions (5 credits)
  • GPD 572 - Profession in Focus (5 credits)
  • GPD 575 - Reading in the Content Area (5 credits)

Application and Registration Process

Step 1: Submit your university application

  • Apply to the Graduate School at CWU
    • Apply as Graduate Student option
    • Campus: CWU-Online
    • Academic Major: Family and Consumer Science Ed

Step 2: Submit your program application

Step 3: Follow up

  • Acceptance to the program email will be sent to the student. Program Director, Dr. Bree Devlin will establish a Plan of Study for student to review.

Step 4: Begin coursework

  • Enroll in courses through MyCWU and complete coursework on Canvas or partnering IDEA universities Learning Platforms.
  • Pass CTE 700 - Master's Thesis, Project Study, or Examination
