Sarah Spurgeon (1903-1985) was a beloved and accomplished professor of art (painting and drawing) and art education in the Department of Art + Design at Central Washington University between 1939 and 1971. Spurgeon was honored as professor emeritus upon her retirement in 1971 and in 1977 CWU paid further tribute to her contributions by dedicating the Sarah Spurgeon Gallery in Randall Hall.

Her artwork is disbursed throughout many private collections and remains on display on campus: Painted tiles, depicting the history of printing techniques can be seen around the library fireplace of Hebeler Hall, and her portrait of Corrine Farrell decorates the lobby of Farrell Hall. The Ellensburg arts community continues to remember Sarah Spurgeon’s steady devotion to her students and commitment to their work and careers in art.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Sarah Spurgeon Gallery is to offer the campus of Central Washington University and the community at large the opportunity to view and experience art first hand. The Gallery's exhibitions and related outreach programs (such as workshops, artist lectures, and interpretive programs) are designed to support the Department's educational objectives as well as to enhance, engage, and challenge the viewer’s knowledge and understanding of art + design. The Gallery also presents artists and viewers alike with opportunities to explore culturally diverse ideas in an academic environment.
