Mathematics: Middle-Level Education (BA)
Program Description
This major partially satisfies the criteria for a teaching endorsement in middle-level mathematics (4-9), qualifying students to teach mathematics at the middle school or junior high levels. Students who successfully complete the Mathematics: Middle-Level Education BA and STEM Teaching Program (an alternative to the Professional Education Program) are eligible to apply for Washington State teaching certification. In addition to completing graduation requirements, teacher certification candidates must meet all Washington State teacher certification requirements. See the STEM education advisor as soon as possible to develop a course of study.A student may complete the Mathematics: Middle-Level Education BA without gaining entry to the Teacher Certification Program or completing the STEM Teaching Program, Professional Education Program, or Secondary Education major. Under such circumstances a teacher certification endorsement in middle-level mathematics will not be granted. This option exists for those individuals who wish to work in informal STEM education settings, tutoring, or curriculum development that do not require certification.
Likely Career Paths
Middle school math teacher, informal math educator, tutor, math curriculum writer.

Advising Notes
- All major courses used in the major must have a grade of C or higher.
- Schedule an advising appointment with Sam Ludlow (samantha.ludlow@cwu.edu) as soon as possible to discuss course schedule and admission to the teacher certification program if you are seeking a teaching endorsement.
- If courses above are completed, students can finish both this major and the teacher certification program (STEM teaching major) in two years.
- Any Washington state DTA (Direct Transfer Agreement) degree will satisfy all general education requirements, but may not meet the Teacher Certification Program course pre-requisite requirements. Requirements can be found at Teacher Certification Program Admission.
- Major requirements may change over time; students will be expected to meet the catalog requirements in place at the time they are admitted to the major. Furthermore, state teaching requirements sometimes change irrespective of catalog year, so students are advised to maintain regular contact with their advisor while at CWU.
