Old Heat Renovation Project

  • Kittitas County, local governments, along with Central Washington University, are launching "Forging the Future" project to transform the Old Heat facility
  • The initiative aims to create a hub for technology innovation and business development in central Washington
  • A state commerce department grant is funding the initial planning phase, expected to last two years
  • Information about the project:

The transformation of CWU’s historic Old Heat facility is centered on creating a regional hub for innovation, entrepreneurship, and workforce development. This project reimagines the former steam plant as a space where ideas, industries, and communities converge to shape central Washington’s economic future.

Through a phased modernization, Old Heat will potentially house a business incubator, research and development labs, and technological training spaces — all designed to serve entrepreneurs, industry partners, and educational institutions across the region. CWU subject matter experts will collaborate with users to advance innovation in fields such as agriculture, aviation, cybersecurity, and advanced manufacturing.

CWU President Jim Wohlpart emphasized the collaborative nature of the initiative, noting that partnerships with local community colleges and K-12 districts are essential to the region’s long-term resilience and prosperity.

Currently in the feasibility study phase, supported by a CERB grant from the Washington State Department of Commerce, the project team is identifying future uses, potential partners, and funding pathways. With broad regional support, the revitalized Old Heat facility is poised to become a cornerstone of inclusive, innovation-driven growth — not just for CWU, but for the entire central Washington community.

We will share these ideas and input across the University / County project partners.
