Hundreds of high school students and their parents, supporters, mentors and mascots packed Nicholson Pavilion on Friday for the kickoff of the regional Washington FIRST Robotics Competition, a two-day event at Central Washington University that pits robot against robot in a specially designed game.

Ten students from Thorp School, Kittitas Secondary School, Ellensburg High School and the Ellensburg Homeschool Co-op formed one team representing Kittitas County for this year’s competition. The team is among 34 others from Washington and Oregon high schools.

Teams loaded in on Thursday evening. Friday’s event kicked off at 8 a.m. with inspections and practice matches. A high-energy opening ceremony was at 10:30 a.m. and qualifying matches took up the rest of the day, giving teams a chance to scout each other and form alliances for today’s competition.
