Following a nationwide search, Jeffrey MacMillan, who has been serving as interim general manager of CWU’s on-campus student radio station, 88.1 FM The ‘Burg for a year, will assume that position on a permanent basis.

“With his hiring, Jeff will be able to continue adding to the quality of 88.1 FM The ‘Burg and connecting with the Ellensburg community,” said CWU Dean of Student Success Richard DeShields, who made the appointment.

“What I want is for us to become the best radio program and school in the Pacific Northwest,” MacMillan said. “Central should be the name you think of when you think of college radio.”

MacMillan, who is a 2016 CWU communications graduate, said his goals include developing more podcasting to augment live and recorded programming, creating an enhanced mobile app, expanding the station’s social media presence, and developing additional student news and sports programming activities.

“I chose Central because I thought it was a great value,” said MacMillan, who is from Vancouver. “I found my way to the com [communications] department and interacted with a lot of people who wanted to give me opportunities. I want to be able to provide those same kind of opportunities—and others—to students. For me, Central is all about opportunities.”

DeShields echoed those sentiments and added: “Jeff understands that KCWU is an incubator of great talent and that our students can use their experience at the station to continue into their future careers.”

Last March, MacMillan received an award for Best Sports Interview at the 77th Annual Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) International Conference for a conversation he helped conduct for the KCWU program “Sports Central” with Michael Sam, the first openly gay player to be drafted into the National Football League, who made a presentation on the Ellensburg campus.

Located in the Student Union and Recreation Center, 88.1 FM The ‘Burg has been operated under a non-commercial, educational FM broadcast license, first issued by the Federal Communications Commission to the CWU Board of Trustees in 1962.
