Central Washington University's Diversity and Equity Center (DEC) hosted a special MLK Remembrance event on Thursday, January 12, to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. More than 70 people attended the event, which sought not only to pay tribute to the civil rights icon, but also to highlight the roles all of us can play in carrying his vital work forward in our everyday lives.

DEC Director Mal Stewman sees the event as an important opportunity to foster a united front for justice and civility.

"It felt good to come together as a campus community of students, staff, and faculty to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King," he said. "While the work is not finished, it's gatherings like these that remind us that we can only fulfill 'the dream' by working together in a spirit of unity."

The event took place in the SURC Theatre, featuring vocal performances by Melany Peterson and Dr. T. Andre Feagin, along with speeches that paid tribute to Coretta Scott King, reflected on Dr. King's legacy, and envisioned a future of civil engagement and activism.
