CWU, Roslyn Team up for Public Art Installation

The Roslyn Downtown Association and Central Washington University will present The Roslyn Silhouette Project, which opens in Roslyn at 5:00 p.m. on June 5, and will continue throughout the summer.

The installation features 28 full-sized silhouettes, illustrated and designed by 76 students of Cle-Elum-Roslyn High School, which are inspired by the history of Upper Kittitas County. In addition to the silhouettes, 52 students of Walter Strom Middle School have created their historical double and have drawn their portraits. Both the silhouettes and the portraits will be installed in the storefronts in the recently refurbished Northwest Improvement Building (NWI) and in businesses around town.

“Our purpose is to engage the community of Roslyn in a public art project aimed at increasing historical heritage awareness by shedding light on the rich and multicultural history of the Roslyn community,” said Natalie Dotzauer, local artist and senior lecturer at CWU.

As project lead and coordinator, Dotzauer designed the Roslyn Silhouette Project. Her team is comprised of six student interns from CWU’s Department of Art. The team filled a variety of roles, from promoting the project, fabricating the silhouettes out of plywood, researching Roslyn’s history, and acting as teachers’ assistants in the schools.
