CWU Math Department Hosting Industry Panel Discussion This Week

The Central Washington University Mathematics department will host four professional mathematicians from across the industry for an open panel Wednesday, July 7, at 11 a.m. The meeting, part of the ongoing Mount Stuart Math Seminar, will be accessible via Zoom, and no pre-registration is required.

Attendees can expect open and in-depth discussion with each of the panelists, concerning the opportunities and challenges math students will encounter over the course of their careers.

Each panelist will share stories from their career and answer questions from the moderator and audience members. Wednesday's panelists are:

• Ryan Currier, an information analyst for Kaiser Permanente
• Ken Mwangi, an actuary for Banner Health
• Alex Perry, analytics manager from DAT Freight and Analytics
• Justin Smith, a managing actuary at AF group

Wednesday's panel is the first of the bi-weekly Mount Stuart Math Seminar, which is being organized by CWU Assistant Professor Sooie-Hoe Loke, co-director of the 2021 Virtual Central Convergence Research Experiences for Undergraduates (CC-REU).

Funded in spring 2021, the CC-REU summer program features research across a broad range of mathematical topics, including topology, number theory, applied math, probability, and statistics.

Three projects will be offered every year, with 13 students recruited annually to work with one of three CWU Mathematics faculty mentors. Interlaced with the mathematical research projects are professional development training, seminars by guest mathematicians, and field trips to local sites.

On August 18, students will give presentations at the Mount Stuart Math Seminar and discuss the work they've done this summer.
