CORPORA Exhibition by Laura Buchan Opens November 1
- October 29, 2018

Delicate, but impossible anatomical forms that walk the line between fantastic and realistic are the subjects of CORPORA, an exhibit by wood sculptor Laura Buchan. Buchan will display her work in a solo exhibition at the Sarah Spurgeon Gallery at Central Washington University.
The exhibit will open on Thursday, November 1, beginning with an artistâs talk by Buchan at 4:00 p.m. in Randall 117. A reception in the gallery will follow, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. CORPORA will remain on display through December 2.
Buchan investigates forms found in nature and anatomy, and unites various anatomical structures from different sourcesâplants, animals, insects, and humansâin her works. She seeks to explore the discomfort often felt with normal occurrences in the natural world, as well as to expose the tragic loss of biodiversity our planet faces today. The pieces often combine elements from past and present species, creating a statement about what remains, and a warning of irreplaceable loss.
Recent exhibitions include the 2014 BAM Biennial: Knock on Wood at the Bellevue Arts Museum, Why Wood? Contemporary Practice in a Timeless Material at SOFA Chicago 2016, and the 2016 Seattle Center Sculpture Walk in Seattle, where the artist created a temporary large-scale suspended installation.
Buchan also received the first place award for the INTERSTATE exhibition in 2016, a national juried exhibition organized by the CWU Department of Art + Design.
The Sarah Spurgeon Gallery is located in Randall Hall on Dean Nicholson Boulevard and is open weekdays 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and on weekends, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The gallery will be closed November 12 in observance of Veteranâs Day, and November 21â25 for Thanksgiving break.
