Art + Design Alumnus Castro Opens "Hermosa Herencia" at the Provost Gallery October 22
- October 22, 2018
- CWU

Hermosa Herencia, [Beautiful Heritage] a new exhibition by Kiara Castro will open at the Provost Gallery today, October 22.
Castro is an American artist raised in and around the Yakima Valley. Born from immigrant parents, a Mexican father and a Guatemalan mother, Castro creates work about her identity and experience as a first generation Latinx woman through the use and combination of photography, analog processes, mixed media, and sculpture.
There will be an artist's reception from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., today (October 22) in the gallery, 302 Barge Hall.
From a young age, Castro has been interested in the arts, though was never encouraged to pursue it. It wasn’t until she attended a higher education institution that she decided to pursue art as a career, even though she felt she lacked the experience.
She received her BFA in Studio Art from CWU in the summer of 2018 and has exhibited regionally around the Pacific Northwest. Now as an art teacher at Granger High School she hopes to encourage the next generation of artists by cultivating creativity and teaching career transferable skills.
The exhibition is open to the public 8:00–5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
