CWU men’s rugby stalwart Calvin Liulamaga became the latest Wildcat to be selected in the first round of the Major League Rugby (MLR) Collegiate Draft last month, going 11th overall to the Seattle Seawolves.
The Auburn native played a key role for head coach Todd Thornley’s squad over the past four years, earning second-team All-American honors in 2023-24. Liulamaga is the Wildcats’ third first-round pick in the past five MLR Collegiate Drafts.
“We are immensely proud of Calvin joining our list of MLR first-round draft picks and look forward to watch him make the jump to the next level,” Thornley said. “I know he will be beyond excited to potentially play in front of his hometown crowd next season and we look forward to cheering him on from afar.”
The Seawolves expressed their excitement in choosing the 6-foot-1, 215-pound Liulamaga, calling him “a dynamic center” who “brings a powerful presence to our lineup and adds depth to our already talented roster.”
The Seawolves also spoke to Liulamaga’s competitive spirit and dedication to the game. He was a nominee for the prestigious Scholz Award, and he demonstrated exceptional skill, agility, and determination during his time with the CWU program.
“His impressive rugby resume and strong work ethic make him a perfect fit for the Seawolves,” the team said on its website. “We are confident that his energy and commitment will be a great asset both on and off the field.”
