I came to CWU as a tenure-track Assistant Prof. in 1996 (the Clinton-Dole election), after year(s)-long stints at Colorado College and Juniata College. Since coming here, I’ve also supervised interns with the state government in Oly, as well as Congressional offices, and numerous different campaigns for various offices, among others like politically-related non-profits.

My main areas of interest and expertise is American politics and government, with emphasis on political communication, public opinion, the mass media and the presidency, and I also dabble in African politics.

In my classes, I often use formal class debates on issues or reforms, as well as developing online interactive exercises to supplement course material in hybrid formats.

I was part of a committee in conjunction with Latino and Latin American Studies to hire, and then design the performance criteria, for a joint-appointment Latino-focused position in LLAS and Political Science, 2007-08.

I have been an op-ed contributor on public and current affairs for the Ellensburg Daily Record newspaper since early 2000s.
My wife and I have been married for more than 3 decades, and I have two feline sons (here) and four human step-grandkids (elsewhere).
Outside of the academy, I like to (cautiously) risk life and limb and “green” outdoor adventures like hiking, kayaking, and cycling.
