Dr. Christina Kowalski-Holien is a spinto soprano, vocal pedagogue, director, and scholar who bridges high-level academic instruction with an extensive, 30-year international performing career. Born in Germany, she earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Music in Vocal Performance and Acting from the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt am Main, and completed her Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of Washington, where her doctoral research examined Japanese traditional performance arts and their cross-cultural adaptations.

A two-time First Prize winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Regional Awards (Oregon) and the Ellen Faull Gordon Vocal Competition, Dr. Kowalski-Holien has performed leading operatic and concert repertoire across Europe and the United States. As a specialist in German Lieder, her concert highlights include repeated performances of Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin, alongside appearances as a featured soloist with the Tacoma, Vancouver, Cascade, and Olympia Symphonies. After making her U.S. debut as Marzelline in Beethoven’s Fidelio, she went on to sing signature operatic roles across the Pacific Northwest, including Tosca, Madama Butterfly (Cio-Cio-San), La Bohème (Mimì), Don Giovanni (Donna Elvira), Norma, and Pagliacci (Nedda). Her solo aria album, The Seven, was recorded with the Cascade Symphony Orchestra.

Dr. Kowalski-Holien served as an Affiliate Artist Faculty member at the University of Puget Sound for over 15 years, where she taught classical voice, led community music initiatives, and directed opera scenes. Her holistic pedagogical style integrates healthy vocal mechanics, breath management, stylistic versatility, stage movement, and acting across genres. In addition to her classical studio, she actively coaches commercial recording artists, touring bands, and musical theater performers. Drawing on twelve years of dance training, stage combat proficiency, and extensive directing experience, she regularly writes, choreographs, and directs musical theater productions throughout Central Washington.

Her published scholarship includes contributions to Smithsonian Folkways Tools for Teaching, and she maintains memberships in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA), and the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS).
