Black Hall Renovation

At CWU, we are dedicated to creating a more inclusive and dynamic campus through the $6 million renovation of Black Hall. This exciting project will expand the Diversity and Equity Center (DEC), nearly doubling its size to give you a space that feels like home and upgrade spaces in the College of Education and Professional Studies.

Our vision for the renovated Black Hall centers around creating a welcoming space for all students, where cultures can be celebrated, shared, and experienced. The enlarged DEC will feature:

  • A community kitchen for sharing cultural foods
  • Dedicated spaces for student organizations
  • All-gender restrooms
  • A reflection room for moments of quiet and meditation
  • Event spaces for campus-wide gatherings

This is your space, and your voice matters. Throughout the design process, CWU is working closely with Opsis Architecture, as well as the campus committee to ensure student input is central to the project. Review the presentation for selecting materials and artwork.

CWU students started the conversation through activism for marginalized voices, trying to ensure that those voices had a space they could call their own to help them in their educational journey. While students will continue to advocate for more, we are grateful to see the work of many student leaders of past and present begin to come to fruition.

Project Updates

  • Phase 1 is “Substantially Complete” and CEPS is setting up the new “Education Student Collaboration Space” with an opening date pending.
  • Phase 2 is underway (please see the attached plan) and is expected to be complete Fall 2025
  •  Phase 3 will begin after occupancy of Phase 2

Looking Ahead

Construction is expected to take about one year, with the new DEC spaces set to open by January 2026. We’re excited to create a space that reflects CWU’s diverse student body—a place where Wildcats can find their home away from home.
