CWU Empowerment Center To Host Annual Women's Achievement Celebration

March 6, 2006

ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Central Washington University President Jerilyn S. McIntyre will be among those honored at the 8th Annual Women's Achievement Celebration (WAC) on March 8.

McIntyre will join fellow honorees Megan Schmidt, a psychologist with CWU Health, Counseling and Wellness Services; Cynthia Murray, CWU Career Services counselor; and Dr. Amy Hoover, CWU flight technology professor and organizer of the university's annual "Aviation, Construction, Engineering, and Safety" summer camp.

They will be the guests of honor at the WAC awards banquet Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Club Central in the Samuelson Union Building (SUB) on the Ellensburg campus.

"They were selected for their work to assist women in professional - and personal -- ways to excel, take risks and become the best that they can be," says Katrina Whitney, Center for Student Empowerment center director.

Tickets are $8 per person for the semi-formal affair, which will include a catered dinner. Tickets are available at the SUB Information Booth and Ellensburg Chamber of Commerce.

"It's important for our community to take a moment to acknowledge individuals who have created and supported opportunities for women's advancements," Whitney adds.

In addition, senior sociology major Jen Ham, from Fort Lewis, Wash., will receive the "Student Empowerment Award" and the "Keys to Success Award" will be presented to James Wagner, CWU residence hall coordinator.

Patricia Loera, program officer with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, will present the keynote address at the banquet.
