STEM Ed Courses


Fall 2023

  • STP 502 (2cr) Designing and Implementing Problem-Based Instruction in STEM
    • STEM Leaders will analyze, discuss, and plan teaching practices for using problems authentic to STEM disciplines to activate prior knowledge and apply the new information through discourse and authentic assessments.  
  • STP 504 (2cr) Designing and Implementing Project-Based Instruction in STEM
    • STEM leaders will analyze and plan projects authentic to STEM disciplines that help students develop content knowledge and critical thinking skills by actively engaging in meaningful real-world projects.

Winter 2024

  • STP 503 (2cr) Making STEM Learning Environments Culturally Responsive
    • STEM leaders will unpack their own intercultural understanding and study the culture in their classroom using a culturally responsive framework to plan changes to better respect and integrate students’ cultures.
  • STP 506 (3cr) STEM Leadership Through Peer Mentoring and Coaching
    • STEM leaders will study peer mentoring and coaching frameworks, developing the capacity and skills to use the coaching cycle and appropriate strategies to help other teachers become more effective educators.

Spring 2024

  • STP 507 (2cr) STEM Networking Leadership Seminars
    • STEM leaders will leverage community collaborations to support STEM education in their districts, developing relationships to use as a resource for designing equitable, innovative projects directly connected to STEM careers. May be repeated up to 6 credits.
    • Participants will have a unique opportunity to engage directly with educators in the field. Pacific Education Institute will connect educators with local expert teachers who specialize in implementing place-based and community focused curricula aligned with state learning standards. As part of the experience, seminar participants will conduct interviews with these educators, delving into topics such as challenges, benefits, and strategies for student engagement within place-based education. These firsthand insights will serve as a valuable resource, enriching participant understanding of effective teaching practices in community-based education.
    • Learn from a FieldSTEM Educator (6-10 clock hour option)
    • Reflection and Synthesis (20 clock hour option)
      • Learn from a FieldSTEM Educator, meet virtually with colleagues, and complete a final assignment and/or task.
      • Enroll in STEM Leadership Course (STP 507)

STEM summer schedule is highlighted in the following three ways
  • STEM Clock Hours

    • STEM clock hours are offered through CWU's Continuing Education
    • $3 per hour
    • 3-5 hours of learning in collaboration with others per course

  • Non-Matriculated Graduate Credits

    • Earn CWU credit for each class
    • Non-Matric enrollment fee in addition to summer tuition assessed per credit
    • 3-5 hours of learning in collaboration with others plus assignments via Canvas through August 18th

  • STEM Leadership Master's

    • Apply for CWU Graduate School by May 15; earn CWU credit per each class
    • Summer tuition assessed per credit
    • 3-5 hours of learning in collaboration with others plus assignments via Canvas through August 18th

  • Monday
    No classes on Monday, July 15th, 2024. 

     

  • Tuesday
    STP507 (2cr) STEM Network Leadership Seminar

    In-Person Field Trip, Tuesday July 16th, 2024 - 9am-2pm with specifics to come. 

    STEM leaders will attend seminars led by STEM partners located throughout Washington State. Through participation in these seminars, STEM leaders will gain opportunities to integrate community-based assets and resources into their current educational context. STEM leaders will learn to leverage community collaborations to support STEM education in their districts, developing relationships that they can use as a resource for designing equitable, innovative projects directly connected to STEM careers.

     

  • Wednesday
    STP501 (2cr) Design Authentic STEM Explorations for Diverse Learners

    In-person launch July 17th, 2024 9am-12pm

    STEM Leaders will engage in and analyze authentic STEM explorations to identify methods for making STEM learning environments engaging and relevant for a diverse group of learners. STEM Leaders will then use STEM best practices to plan and assess authentic STEM explorations that empower a diverse group of learners to explore and create meaningful demonstrations of their learning. By the end of the course, STEM Leaders will design instructional planning and assessment documents for authentic STEM explorations to be used in K-12 STEM classrooms.

    STP505 (2cr) Reflective Teaching to Increase Student Success

    In-person launch July 17th, 2024 11am-2pm

    STEM leaders will collaboratively engage in reflective teaching practices and examine how these practices impact student learning. STEM leaders will develop a flexible plan for using multiple forms of authentic evidence to improve their learning environment design and teaching practices in ways that respond proactively to the needs of students. By the end of the course, STEM leaders will collect student evidence and develop a plan to use the collected evidence to improve teaching based on student needs.

  • Thursday
    MATH512 (3cr) Functions and Modeling for Teachers

    In-person launch July 18th, 2024 - 9am-12pm

    Educators will explore fundamental properties of functions from a mathematical modeling perspective. Teachers will investigate function concepts by authentically engaging with the full modeling cycle to model real-world scenarios.

    MATH511 (3cr) Statistics: Interpreting the World Through Data Statistics: Interpreting the World Through Data

    In-person launch July 18th, 2024 - 1-4pm

    This project-based course will support teachers in constructing, analyzing, and interpreting appropriate statistical models. Teachers will develop statistical habits of mind regarding quantifying variability to nurture future students’ quantitative literacy.
