  • Learn to develop curriculum, materials and instruction for English language learners (ELLs) for inclusive and sheltered learning settings in Kindergarten-grade 12
  • Focus on highly effective ESL and content-based curricular, instructional and assessment practices that are culturally congruent with diverse speakers of other languages
  • Knowledgeable and experienced faculty who focus on engagement, quality learning and positive learning environments
  • Integration of authentic materials and technology into every course
  • Practical knowledge and instruction development though interactive for experienced educators
  • Investigate second language acquisition theory and cultural patterns
  • Approved by the Professional Education Standards Board
  • Complete coursework in a 12-month period (a WEST-E exam required for endorsement)
  • The ELL Endorsement required effective Sept 2019 for all educators teaching ELLs in Washington State to comply with (WA House Bill 1541 (RCW 28A.180.040)

The ELL endorsement program for certified teachers is comprised of the following courses:

Summer Quarter Offering

• EDBL 514 – Introduction to Linguistic Diversity in Education 3 credits

• EDBL 529 – Methods of Teaching ESL: History, Theories, and Materials 3 credits

Fall Quarter Offering

• EDBL 530 – Sheltering in the Mainstream I: Methods 3 credits

Winter Quarter Offering

• EDBL 518 – Studies and Problems in Educational Linguistics 3 credits

• EDBL 531 – Sheltering in the Mainstream II: Assessment and Resources 3 credits

Spring Quarter Offering

• EDBL 550 – Advanced Literacy Development with Linguistically Diverse Students 3 credits
