Case Management

The primary role of Central Washington University Case Management Services is to coordinate follow-up care for students in crisis or for students with higher needs and to provide assessment and referral for students to appropriate resources and services. Case Management Services focus on connecting students with appropriate resources and support to minimize the impact of an incident or behaviors on the specific student, other students, and faculty/staff, in order to balance an individual’s needs with those of the surrounding community.

The CWU Case Manager assists in crisis intervention, referrals, and advocacy. For those experiencing crisis, it is common to need additional support and guidance as it can be difficult to navigate the many resources and services available. Meeting with the CWU Case Manager is often a great starting point to gain assistance about management of situations that are unique to each individual.

Case Management Referrals
Students are referred for Case Management services through a variety of channels, with the most common being:

  • Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities, which coordinates responses to submitted “Behaviors of Concern” reports as well as other general concerns identified through contacts made with other departments, faculty/staff, or students.
  • Consideration by counseling/medical staff at the Student Medical and Counseling Clinc (SMACC) for additional services not provided through that office.
  • Administrative referrals through either the Dean of Student Success, Housing, or Residence Life Offices.
  • Self-referral for Case Management services.

Some of the services provided through Case Management include, but are not limited to:

  • Assessment of individual needs and referral(s) to appropriate services and resources at CWU and within the larger community.
  • Exploration of (and follow up regarding) behavioral health concerns related to the student’s living and academic environments.
  • Coordination & follow-up related to medical/mental health outcomes resulting in unplanned hospitalization, Leave-Of-Absence processes, general safety concerns.
  • Consultation with various departments and services involved in a student’s CWU experience (housing, conduct, academic, health, advising, etc.).
