Get to Know Our Recreation Director: Matthew Boyer

Central Washington University’s newly-hired Director of Recreation, Matthew Boyer, has hit the ground running during his first three weeks on campus. Boyer has 24 years of experience in the field of Recreation, starting as a free agent on an intramural team at a junior college. It was this opportunity that lead him to meet the program coordinator and acquire his first recreation-related position as a young adult. After that, Boyer moved onto an intramural supervisor position at the University of West Florida and then worked as a graduate assistant at the University of Florida and completed his master’s degree. Before becoming a Wildcat, Boyer’s professional experience includes San Jose State University, UNC Charlotte, and most recently  as the Associate Director of Programs and Outreach at Louisiana State University.

“It started off with a simple passion and love of sports, and led into a career with higher education,” Boyer remarked.

What sparked Matt’s interest in CWU Recreation the most, was the dedicated professional staff, positive comments he had heard about the department, and the Recreation Expansion Project, set to open in Fall of 2018.

During Boyer’s time at LSU, his team executed a facility expansion and redesign that increased the square footage from 4 to 9, per student. His responsibilities for that project included the research and acquisition of equipment, facility layout, and development of operating procedures for the three programmatic areas of fitness, adventure, and sport programs. This opportunity taught him many things that he can now bring to the current CWU Recreation Expansion Project.

One aspect of CWU Recreation that Matt enjoys is watching the impact that it can have on overall student success.

“In addition to the impacting academic performance and retention, we also provide experiences that develop skills that employers look for when hiring.”

Boyer has jumped right in and plans to make many improvements to CWU Recreation’s facility, programs, and operations. He plans to look at improving access to programs and services, partnering with other campus organizations to focus on student well-being, and much more.

On a more personal note, Boyer enjoys participating in all sports, but football and softball are really his favorites. He is also looking forward to exploring the Ellensburg area and having access to outdoor activities. If he is not at CatTrax East or Starbucks getting coffee, you can find him in the Recreation administrative office.

Boyer wants to make sure that students get to voice their opinions and provide constructive feedback about Recreation, so if you see him around campus, playing on an intramural softball team, or around the SURC, feel free to say hello.
