“It’s an honor to be recognized for the work we’ve done,” said Julian Smart, head videographer and sophomore film major at CWU. “Working in the Publicity Center has been a great opportunity to be creative, work with other artistic students and build my portfolio.”

The Best Video Design was awarded for a “Mapworks Survey” spot created by Smart, with design elements crafted by senior graphic design major Laurel Fisher.

Smart based another finalist entry, “ASCWU Open House” on design elements created by Danny Lazo, also a senior graphic design major.

Honorable mention recognition went to “Operation Elf,” a Claymation-style video designed by senior Catherine Johnson and Smart incorporating design element by freshman graphic design major Kaitlyn Kurisu. Smart’s production “Happy Holidays from HYPE” also received honorable mention honors.

According to the Visix, Inc. website, the competition was launched in 2008 to recognize the best content designs created for use with its AxisTV digital signage software, which is utilized by the Publicity Center’s Wildcat Access advertising program. Marketing, communications and digital signage design specialists judged more than 250 entries and announced the three category winners May 10. Judges’ decisions were based on technical design, creativity and communications effectiveness.

"It's incredible for our students to get recognized like this," said Justin Beckman, senior graphic designer who supervises the Publicity Center's designers and video production. "The Publicity Center is fortunate to hire some of the best student talent from the graphic design and video programs at CWU, providing them hands-on experience, while offering quality services to campus clients. Their passion and drive is a key force in our mission to promote events and activities across campus."

As an award recipient, the Publicity Center will receive a Sharp 43” Class LED 1080p Smart HDTV Roku television, a Visix Creative Services Team Theme Pack and a mounted, personalized Expression Awards trophy. The winning entry will also be recognized in Visix’s e-newsletter and press release announcing winners, be featured on Visix websites and social media and have use of the official Expression Award winner logo.
