President's Advisory Council - December 17, 2008

  1. Action Items

    1. Approval of PAC Minutes from December 3, 2008.
      Motion to approve the PAC Minutes from December 3 as presented by Mr. Vertrees. Seconded by Dr. Savoian. No further discussion. Motion carried.
  2. For the Good of the Order

    Carmen Rahm, AVP for Information Technology:
    Mr. Rahm reminded folks that this time of the year there is a great deal of computer hacking that occurs. For more information, see the "tech bytes" section on the CWU Intranet page.

    Roy Savoian, Dean, College of Business:
    Dr. Savoian reported that final exams went well. Fall Faculty Day was December 8 and discussions continued to focus on faculty scholarship at the department level. The Provost's Council and the deans have been discussing budget reduction scenarios.

    Jan Bowers, Chair, Academic Department Chairs Organization:
    Dr. Bowers reported that ADCO has been working with Sherer Holter, Charlotte Tullos, and Staci Sleigh-Layman on principles of community. The group is trying to bring back the Central PAWS program that focused on building community. ADCO is also working with Teacher Education on the length of the Teacher Education program. Kevin Nemeth will be meeting with ADCO next month to discuss how Continuing Education might be able to help with budget reduction scenarios.

    Elaine Ames, Chair, Employee Council:
    Ms. Ames reported that Employee Council met yesterday and reviewed results from a recent survey that was conducted. The council learned that 69.7% of CWU classified employees do not know what Employee Council does. A majority of folks had concerns about the budget and they felt like they didn't have all of the information. Sherer Holter addressed the group regarding budget concerns and this presentation will be available on CWU Itunes soon.

    Staci Sleigh-Layman, Chair, Exempt Employee Association:
    No report.

    Shelly Johnson, Director, Budget Planning:
    Ms. Johnson reported that the budget office is anxiously waiting for the Governor's budget to be released.

    Becky Watson, Director, Public Relations & Marketing:
    Dr. Watson reported that PR & Marketing has been working with a consultant on marketing issues. A marketing report will be submitted to Cabinet later today.

    Judy Miller, Board Secretary:
    No report.

  3. Executive Reports

    Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs:
    Dr. Quirk reported that the reappointment files are currently in his office. He will be reviewing these files during the next few weeks. The governor will provide a briefing on the budget tomorrow. Ann Anderson will be attending that meeting as CWU's representative.

    Vice President for Business & Financial Affairs:
    Mr. Vertrees reported that there was a recent break-in at Carmody Munro. Additional information will be available from Public Safety and Police services soon.

    Vice President for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management:
    John Swiney reported for Dr. Tullos. Winter enrollments look pretty good. The University of Washington, Western Washington University, and Washington State University have put a freeze on their new freshmen class, so we hope to pick up some of those students for Fall 2009. The "Central Pledge" brochure is going to print this week. Housing numbers are full for winter quarter.

    Vice President for University Relations:
    Jen Gray reported for Dr. Hall. The Foundation Board meets on Friday, December 19 by Video conference. The board will receive an update from U.S. Bank on earnings. This will make a big impact on the endowment spending rate.

    Chief Planning Officer:
    No report.

    Dr. McIntyre asked how the "Central Pledge" program was going to be publicized? Dr. Watson reported that a press release is currently being drafted and will be distributed soon. Dr. Gaudino will be initiating campus discussions on the budget early in January. The governor's budget is supposed to be out tomorrow. Ann Anderson will be attending the budget meeting tomorrow, so she will get the information out to the campus as soon as possible. Ann Anderson, Wayne Quirk, and Bill Vertrees have been designated as the media contacts for budget questions. Dr. McIntyre added that she will be available by email and phone the next couple of weeks.

    1. Items for the University Bulletin, President's Report, Central Connections, and other communications
      Kittitas County Technology Group - the group has identified five projects that they will be collaborating on.

    Leslie Webb has been selected as AVP for Student Affairs at Boise State. She will be leaving shortly after the first of the year.
