President's Advisory Council - April 18, 2007

Dr. McIntyre asked the group for a moment of silence for the Virginia Tech incident.

  1. Action Items

    1. Approval of PAC Minutes from 4.4.07
      Motion to approve the PAC minutes from 4.4.07 as presented by Dr. Bowers. Seconded by Dr. Dippmann. No further discussion. Motion carried.

  2. For the Good of the Order

    Judy Miller, Board Secretary:

    Ms. Miller reminded the group that the next Board of Trustees' meeting is May 4. Agenda items are due tomorrow.

    Leslie Webb, Chair, Diversity Council:

    No report.

    Rebecca Bowers, Dean, College of Education & Professional Studies:

    Dr. Bowers reported that we are three weeks away from the NCATE accreditation visit.

    David Heath, Interim Chair, Employee Council:

    Mr. Heath distributed information regarding Ellensburg School District's proposed calendar for 2007-08. Since the calendar affects many employees at CWU, Mr. Heath suggested that we respond as a university. Mr. Heath also thanked Dr. McIntyre for hosting the Address to Classified Staff on April 9.

    Jeffrey Dippmann, Chair, Faculty Senate:

    Dr. Dippmann reported that the ad hoc scheduling committee met and already has a proposal to bring forward. The general education program review committee is on hold. Cathy Bertleson has withdrawn from chairing the committee. The Distinguished Professor nominations have been forwarded to the Provost. Those will be announced soon. The faculty assessment of academic administrators is due back to the Faculty Senate office Monday, April 30.

    Karen Blair, Chair, ADCO:

    Chairs working on merit procedures, application procedure for adjuncts, and new form in development to assess workload forms.

    Jadon Berry, ASCWU BOD President:

    Mr. Berry reported that the Student Senate for Organizations will be hosting a Virginia Tech Memorial Vigil on Thursday, April 19, 2007 at 9:30 p.m. in the Student Union Theatre. Speak Out Central, an ongoing part of the First Amendment Year Festival, will be held today at 12:00 p.m. in the Student Union Pit. Today's event will focus on the Virginia Tech incident. ASCWU BOD Elections are underway. The BOD is working in collaboration with Alumni Relations on "senior focused" events. They are also in the process of purchasing the "General" from the Alumni Association. The next Fireside Chat is Monday, May 14 at 8:00 p.m. in the Student Union Pit.

    Carmen Rahm, AVP for Information Technology Services:

    Mr. Rahm reported that ITS is supporting the NCATE accreditation visit that is coming up. ITS also participated in Accepted Student Day on April 14. Turnout for the event was great and ITS distributed a lot of information to prospective students and parents. The HR/SAEM upgrade is going well. So far, the project is under budget and ahead of schedule. ITS is currently working with facilities management to find a location for the expanded data center.

  3. Executive Reports

    1. Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
      Dr. Soltz reported that faculty are preparing merit review files under the new merit process. Post tenure review files and tenure/promotion files are now in the Provost's Office. Program review is going well. Dr. Soltz has an offer out to a candidate for the AVP for Undergraduate Studies. He hopes to have that position finalized soon. The search committee for the Assistant to the Provost position should have the short list of candidates soon. The Worst Hard Time by Tim Egan has been selected for next year's One Book, One Campus project. A campus-wide notice will be distributed later this week.
    2. Vice President for Business & Financial Affairs
      Mr. Corona noted that Business and Financial Affairs has several agenda items for the May Board of Trustees' meeting. Mr. Corona is currently working with Ted Barkley, the Ellensburg City Manager, to schedule a city council meeting on campus. Topics for this joint meeting will include: coordination between the city and the university regarding emergency preparedness, and transit issues. If you have other topics, please send them to Mr. Corona as soon as possible.
    3. Vice President for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management
      Dr. Tullos reported that final numbers for this quarter will be available on Friday. The S&A committee finished their budgeting process and will submit a report to the Board of Trustees in May. There will be a one-year anniversary celebration for the SURC building on April 24. In light of the Virginia Tech tragedy, SAEM is working on communications with students. Accepted Student/Recruitment Day on Saturday, April 14 was very successful. Approximately 1100 prospective students and parents attended the event.
    4. Vice President for University Relations
      Dr. Watson reported for Dr. Baker. ITS is assisting Public Relations and Marketing in purchasing a server for the new photo search engine. Multiple staff searches are currently underway in University Relations. The CWU printing policy is currently being reviewed and revised. The policy will come to PAC soon. Public Relations and Marketing is fielding many calls regarding the Virginia Tech incident.
    5. Chief Planning Officer
      Dr. Street reported that the ad hoc alumni tracking group continues to meet with each of the colleges to develop strategies for keeping the alumni database more up to date. Bobby McFerrin will be on campus April 30. His performance will be at 7:00 p.m. in the Music Building Concert Hall. The line up for next year's Performing Arts and Presidential Speaker Series will be announced that evening as well. The theme for next year's speaker series is "Lessons in History."
    6. President
      Dr. McIntyre explained that PAC is shortened today in order for Cabinet members to review and discuss CWU's emergency preparedness plan. She added that we have a plan and it's very flexible, dynamic, and adaptive. It's basically a process plan because you cannot plan for every emergency. Cabinet members have all had National Incident Management System (NIMS) training and are certified in emergency preparedness planning. They have also been involved in periodic tabletop exercises where they have been able to practice protocol. Dr. McIntyre will be in Washington, DC next week attending the American Association of State College and Universities (AASCU) Council of State Reps meeting. In addition she will meet with federal legislators and attend an alumni gathering. CWU has been invited to a bill signing ceremony for the tuition waiver authority tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. in Olympia. Dr. McIntyre commended the students for all their hard work promoting this issue.
