Colloquium - Dr. Michael Goerger, Tuesday, January 26, 4:30 PM, Black 151

On Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at 4:30 PM in Black Hall, Room 151, Dr. Michael Goerger will give a talk titled Spectacles of Blood: Cicero and Violent Video Games.

Simulated violence in video games has provoked concern since the early 1990s. Most critics argue that in-game violence “contaminates” one’s behavior outside of the game. I instead argue, building particularly on Cicero, that in-game violence can be morally problematic in itself. Deriving entertainment from simulated violence may fail to take seriously the gravity of violence in the contemporary world.
