40th Annual Yakima River Cleanup Scheduled for April 27

ELLENSBURG, Wash. (March 27, 2013) — Poor air quality, caused by central Washington wildfires last fall, delayed the annual Yakima River Cleanup. The 40th annual event has now been rescheduled for April 27.
One of Central Washington University’s longest community-involvement efforts, the annual cleanup is sponsored by CWU’s Center for Leadership and Community Engagement. This year’s change will be the first in what will now become an annual spring event.
The change in dates is also allowing for new partnerships, including with the City of Ellensburg, Kittitas County Solid Waste, Kittitas Environmental Education Network, and Bureau of Land Management, which will offer opportunities for trail maintenance and campsite renovation.
About 200 students and community members are expected to participate in this year’s cleanup. Volunteer check-in begins Saturday at 8:00 a.m. on the Student Union and Recreation Center east patio. Participants will be provided with a free “Breakfast of Champions” before heading out to their cleanup locations. A free pizza lunch for volunteers will be available upon their return.
In addition, this year’s event is taking place in conjunction with the Downtown Ellensburg Cleanup.  For more information, visit, or call 509-963-1850.
