Wildcats Hire Trevor Richards to Lead Women's Rugby

Central Washington University Athletics Director Dennis Francois has announced the hiring of Trevor Richards as the head coach of the Wildcats' women's rugby program.

"Trevor has proven himself as a leader and coach this past year," Francois said.  "We are excited to see what he has in store for the program.  I am confident in Trevor's ability to elevate the women's rugby program to new heights.

Richards spent the last year coaching the women's team on an interim basis.  He led the Wildcats to wins over Quinnipiac, Army, and Brigham Young University during the regular season.

"I am humbled to accept the position of head coach for the CWU women's rugby team," Richards said.  "It's an unbelievable opportunity to take the helm of one of the best collegiate rugby programs in the country.  The road to this point has not been easy and there's a lot of work to be done but I am relishing at the chance to take this program even further than it has gone before.  I want to thank everyone that supported me during this process and I look forward to helping to write the next chapter in CWU women's rugby.

The previous two seasons, Richards was the men's rugby graduate assistant under Todd Thornley.

Prior to his work at Central Washington, Richards was a coach with the Institute of Rugby where he worked with former USA 7's coach Matt Hawkins and current Eagle Hannah Lockwood.

Richards coached for Serevi (now Atavus) where he worked alongside Fijian 7's legend Waisale Serevi and former English Lion Ben Gollings.

After his work with Serevi, Richards went on to spend three seasons with the Washington Loggers as an assistant coach and later returned to the University of Nebraska as an assistant coach where he developed the defensive structure for the program.

Prior to his time at Serevi, Richards was the Elite Team Director and Head Coach for the Nebraska Youth Rugby Association where he coached the U19 squad to a national tournament.

During his playing career, Richards spent time at the national level with USA Rugby.  In 2009-10, Richards participated in the Eagles' 7's training camp, selection camp, and was a member of the Eagles' 7's tour to Fiji in January 2010.  Richards was also a 7's Collegiate All-American in 2009.

Richards played for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Queensland.

He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the Unverity of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2010, before working towards his masters in athletic administration while at CWU.
