Men's Rugby Poised to Make Varsity Cup Run

The Central Washington University men's rugby team will host the first round of the Varsity Cup Rugby Championships against Arizona State University this Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Wildcat Rugby Pitch.

The Varsity Cup is America's top collegiate postseason championship, and when all is said and done, one team will be named National Champions.  Fourteen-teams will vie for the chance to be donned Varsity Cup National Champions, and the CWU ASU winner will play the winner of the Utah vs. Oklahoma matchup.

This is the Wildcats third straight Varsity Cup appearance and each year they have reached the semi-finals.

"We have been building toward this postseason run all year," CWU Head Coach Tony Pacheco said," The guys are excited to play in front of our home crowd and take the first step in our goal of a national championship."

With numerous All-Americans, the CWU men's rugby team will be looking for production from their back three of Josh Bower, Zach Siemens and Ian Wright to help the Wildcats spread the field and open up scoring opportunities.

"Obviously we want to get our back three into space and give them opportunities to score tries," Pacheco said.  "In order to accomplish this we need our forward pack to provide us with quality possession throughout the match."

If the Wildcats are victorious Saturday, they will again host the Varsity Cup quarterfinals the following week April. 11 against either Utah or Oklahoma on the Wildcat Rugby Pitch.

In support of the Varsity Cup matchup, the first 250 fans will receive black CWU Varsity cup T-shirts and fans are encouraged to wear black to the game.  Tickets for the game will be $6 for adults, $3 for children, and CWU students and children under the age of five are free.  Ticket purchases will need to be cash only.
