Justice Mary Yu to Speak at CWU Latino/Latina Welcome Reception on October 12

Washington Supreme Court Justice Mary Yu will be the featured speaker at a special reception from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on October 12 sponsored by the Central Washington University Latino/Latina Alumni Association.
Yu’s appearance is part of the alumni group’s annual Welcome Back Picnic for CWU students, which will be held in President’s Reception Area on D Street.
“We’re honored to have Justice Yu participate in our event because she is not only a dynamic public servant but she is an important role model,” said Manuel Rodriguez, director of the CWU Center for Leadership and Community Engagement and co-chair of the CWU Latino/Latina Alumni Association. “She has a compelling personal story that I think students will enjoy hearing.”
Washington Governor Jay Inslee appointed Yu to the Washington Supreme Court in 2014. She is the first openly LGBTQ member of the court as well as the first of Asian descent and the third of Hispanic descent.
In addition to Yu’s presentation, the event, which is free and open to the public, will include Latin food, music provided by Mariachi del Centro and 88.1 The Burg and brief remarks by CWU President James Gaudino and Yazmin Aguilar, student representative on the CWU Board of Trustees.
