Intersection Painting Commemorates CWU's 125th Anniversary

The gateway to Central Washington University received a new look when the university’s 125th anniversary logo recently was painted in the center of the intersection at University Way and Wildcat Way in Ellensburg.
The stylized white and red artwork depicts historic Barge Hall, the first building erected on the CWU campus (in 1893) along with the message “125 Years CWU.” Additionally, the walkways at each of the four sides of the intersection have been painted white and red (with black asphalt bands) to represent the school’s colors.
“The intersection at University Way and Wildcat Way serves as the entrance to our campus from the city, which makes it the appropriate place to celebrate the special relationship between CWU and the people of Ellensburg that has existed for the past 125 years,” said CWU President James L. Gaudino.
The project, a joint effort between CWU and the city of Ellensburg, was approved by the Ellensburg City Council last June. In addition to the intersection at University and Wildcat ways, the university will repaint the intersections at University Way and Chestnut Street and University Way and Main Street.
CWU was founded in 1891 as the Washington State Normal School. The university will commemorate its 125th year with a variety of events and activities throughout the 2016-17 school year.
