Expert to Speak on America and the State of the European Union

Jan Techau, director of the Richard C. Holbrooke Forum at the American Academy in Berlin, will speak on “Europe After Pax Americana—Turmoil and Order in the New World,” on Friday, November 18, at 3 p.m. in the Science II Planetarium.

Techau is an expert on European Union integration and foreign policy, transatlantic affairs, and German foreign and security policy. He previously served as director of Carnegie Europe, the European think tank of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and served in the NATO Defense College’s Research Division.

During his presentation, Techau will address issues such as what is next for Europe as the United States begins to show less willingness to guarantee peace and stability in the region and the traditional instability of Europe returns.

Additionally, he’ll talk about the impact of refugees on Europe’s eastern and southern members, Russia’s efforts to change the post-Cold War world order, the rise of Turkey, the fallout from Brexit, populist uprisings throughout Europe, and the future of the European Union itself.

There will be a reception following his presentation.

The Richard C. Holbrooke Forum at the American Academy in Berlin conducts an ongoing series of international workshops with varying experts who address the most intractable and pressing global issues. It was founded in honor of the late Richard C. Holbrooke, an American diplomat and former Assistant Secretary of State and U.S. Special Envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Techau’s visit is sponsored by the Seattle Eric M. Warburg Chapter of the American Council on Germany and Central Washington University, and was made possible by a grant through the European Recovery Program — Transatlantic Encounters.
