CWU Washington World Fellows Welcome Day

Central Washington University is partnering with Lt. Governor Cyrus Habib, the Honorary Consulate of Spain, and the Association of Washington Generals on a new equity-focused program that sends 15 Washington high school students to study for six weeks in Spain.
The students will be hosted on the CWU campus on Saturday, April 14 for a special Washington World Fellows Welcome Day that includes program orientation and a tour of the university.
Called Washington World Fellows, the program allows the selected high school students to earn college credit for courses taken at the University of Léon and supports their long-term academic goals through high school and beyond. The students will receive fellowships that cover all their costs.
“These students were selected from an incredibly talented applicant pool,” said Habib. “They bring to life the dream behind the program: connecting deserving students with opportunities they might not otherwise have.”
Central Washington’s Office of International Studies and Programs will coordinate the study abroad program and help supervise the students during their time in Spain.
“This unique partnership allows us to highlight the excellent work of our Office of International Studies and Programs and shines a spotlight on Central Washington University as an institution that celebrates diversity and the importance of learning about other people, cultures, and places,” said CWU President James L. Gaudino.
More than 400 10th grade students were nominated for the program by their teachers. Those selected will participate in a six-week immersive Spanish language study abroad program with a full college-level academic schedule and receive post-trip college-preparation support during their 11th and 12th grade years.
Legislation sponsored by Senator Patty Kuderer, SSB 5746, and recently signed by Governor Jay Inslee, dedicates a portion of the Seahawks and Mariners license plate proceeds to the program.
The 2018 study abroad program will begin June 30 and end August 10.
