CWU Track and Field Finishes Day 1 of NCAA Championships

The Central Washington University track and field team finished the first day of action at the 2018 Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday with several impressive performances.
At the end of the first day, senior Kodiak Landis sits in second in the decathlon with a total of 3,819 points. Landis won the long jump and 400-meter portions of the event after leaping a distance of 7.23 meters and recording a time of 47.78 seconds, respectively. He also finished third in the 100-meter with a time of 11.03 seconds.
Senior HarLee Ortega rests in seventh place after the first four events of the women's heptathlon with a total of 2,966 points. Ortega finished fourth in the high jump (1.63m), sixth in the shot put (10.33m), seventh in the 200 (26.05 seconds) and ninth in the 100-meter hurdles (14.93 seconds).
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, freshman Nicole Soleim crossed the finish line in 10:56.95 to claim 18th overall.
The 400-meter hurdles featured a pair of Wildcats competing. Erykah Weems just missed qualifying for the finals, earning eighth with a time of 1:00.40. Weem's time was just three tenths off her personal and school record time of 1:00.10. Ali Anderson finished 20th overall after recording a time of 1:03.10.
The final event of the day featured junior Alexa Shindruk competing in the 10,000-meter. Shindruk placed 13th overall with a time of 35:58.86.
Landis and Ortega will return to action tomorrow for the remainder of the multi-events. Mariyah Vongsaveng is also slated to compete in the 100-meter hurdles.
