CWU Students Study Cybersecurity in Spain
A group of 17 Central Washington University students, led by Robert Lupton, chair of the Department of Information Technology and Administrative Management (ITAM), and ITAM professor Deborah Wills, recently spent several weeks in Spain studying cybersecurity.
The group, which stopped in several Spanish cities including Madrid and Leon, participated in instructional classes supplemented by visits to organizations such as the National Cybersecurity Institute, the University of Leon campus, and several companies in the information and communication technology sector.

The Rector of the University of León welcomed them on this Monday to the program focused on improving their knowledge of Spanish cultureThis morning at the Language Center's main auditorium, Juan Francisco García Marín, Rector of the University of León (ULE), welcomed a group from Central Washington University (CWU).
The group includes professors Robert A. Lupton and Deborah Wills, accompanying seventeen students who will remain in León until next Tuesday. Their trip to Spain began last week with a full program combining education on topics related to cybersecurity and visits to businesses and organizations. The program will also include a cultural section with tours of different cities and monuments.
The Rector, who has been accompanied by Adriana Suárez Corona, Director of ULE's International Outreach Area, and representatives from the Economic Development, Training and Employment Institute of León (Ildefe), shared some words with the CWU visitors, reminding them that León is at the forefront in aspects related to technology security. He encouraged them to take advantage of their visit to know and enjoy both the province and city of León.
The CWU group began their journey through our country in Madrid, and had the opportunity to visit Astorga and the region of La Maragatería, Ponferrada and Las Médulas. Their classes will be supplemented by visits to organizations such as the National Cybersecurity Institute (Incibe), the University of León campus, the technology park, and several companies in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector. During their remaining days in León they will visit the capital's main monuments and take a tour of Basque Country, along with other planned trips.
Development of the partnership agreement among universities
It is important to remember that the ULE and CWU signed an agreement in June 2017, with the goal of collaborating on issues and activities related to professional development, research, undergraduate and graduate education, and academic exchanges for teachers and students. The possibility was even left open for implementing joint degrees.
The CWU was founded in 1891 and is a public institution for higher education similar in size to the ULE, very highly regarded for the quality of its teaching. It has a student body of 12,000, distributed among its main Ellensburg campus and six off-site centers: Lynnwood, Moses Lake, Des Moines, Pierce County, Wenatchee and Yakima.
It offers over 125 undergraduate and master’s degree programs at its College of Arts and Humanities, College of Business, College of Education and Professional Studies, and College of the Sciences.
