CWU in running for national radio Station of the Year for third straight time
For the third consecutive year, Central Washington University’s student radio station, KCWU-FM, has been nominated for the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System IBS award as the nation’s Best College Radio Station, for colleges and universities with 10,000 students or more. The station received the national award in 2015.
“I believe that the truly outstanding work produced by every student is what led to the nomination for 2017 Station of the Year,” said KCWU interim general manager Jeff MacMillan, a 2016 CWU graduate.
That includes nine CWU students who have been nominated in eight individual-award IBS categories this year:
• Tayler Shaindlin, a senior, from Vancouver, is in the running as the nation’s Best On-Air Personality and for producing the Best Public Service announcement, for “Love Glove Club”
• Jackson Sager, senior, Woodland, is among the finalists for Best Talk Radio Program
• In the Best News Interview category, Sager, Vann Berryman, junior, Gig Harbor; and seniors Jeff Crumb, Port Angeles, and Sophia Ferguson, University Place were nominated for their interview with Washington Governor Jay Inslee; and also for Best Political News Coverage for their KCWU Election Night Special
• Gage McHenry, senior, Maple Valley, and MacMillan, Vancouver, are up for the Best Sports Interview, for their conversation with Michael Sam, the first publicly gay player to be drafted into the National Football League, who spoke on the Ellensburg campus last June
• Elena Larrabee, senior, Ellensburg, could receive the award for nation’s Best Promotions Director
• Nicholas Elliott, from Ellensburg, another 2016 CWU alumnus, may do the same as the nation’s Best Station Engineer.
MacMillan said these nominees are among 30 KCWU staff members, who have been candidates for national awards in the last two years.
Founded in 1940, the non-profit IBS represents 90 percent of all educational radio stations in the United States. Station representatives will learn final award winners during the IBS 77th Annual International Conference, March 3 through 5 in New York City.
