CWU Professor Comments on Kittitas Earthquake

Seismologists say a 4.3 magnitude earthquake struck just under the Cascade Range, spreading across Kittitas County and neighboring King and Yakima Counties.

Local geologists at Central Washington University say the quake originated near the town of Liberty, about 20 miles north of Ellensburg.

"It was powerful enough to wake up a few people, but the actual measured ground shaking in liberty itself was 60 microns, which is the width of a sheet of paper," said Geologist instructor Walter Szeliga.

The quake was reported just after 1 a.m. this morning, many people living in the area were asleep, but some 150 of those were awake and reported it to officials.
