Dedicated students. Stunning facilities. Accomplished faculty. Award-winning ensembles. The Department of Music (an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Music) has combined these components to distinguish itself as one of the top music institutions in the Northwest.

With over 400 undergraduate and graduate students combined, our diverse student body pursue a variety of rigorous degree programs including Instrumental and Vocal Performance, Music Education, Composition, Conducting, and Pedagogy. We are dedicated to achieving the highest standards of musical knowledge, performance, and teaching. CWU alumni have earned entrance into top music graduate programs, performed with professional orchestras and military bands, appointed directors at regional public school programs, appointed to higher education faculty positions, and achieved careers in popular and commercial music.

Our over 40 faculty and staff have earned accolades as scholars, performers and teachers. Our faculty perform as soloists with professional orchestras, present at regional and national conferences, published in music journals and books, won composition competition prizes, administered festivals, and created special topics coursework adapted for the 21st century musician. We actively serve in leadership positions at professional music organizations.

Our facilities provide a beautiful resource for learning and performing. Over 150 events take place in our performance spaces hall each year. We also host to several festivals and camps as well as the WIAA/WMEA State Solo and Ensemble Contest.

Our award-winning ensembles consistently receive invitations to state, regional, and international venues of distinction. Among the many highlights for 2017-18: Jazz Band I and Wildcat Chorus will both perform at the 2018 Washington Music Educators Association State Conference, Vocal Jazz I will perform at the 2018 American Choral Directors Association Northwest Region Conference, the Wind Ensemble will perform at the 2018 College Band Directors National Association West/Northwest Division Conference, and the Symphony Orchestra will perform at the 2018 Capital Orchestra Festival at the John F.
