Preparing Faculty Release Appointment Application

NOTE: Effective August 28, 2019, this award is on hold for the 2019- 2020 academic year pending assessment. Applications will not be accepted until further notice.

Summary
The Faculty Development and Research Committee (FDRC) has established a limited number of competitive Faculty Release Appointments to assist CWU tenured/tenure track faculty members with their research, creative and scholarly activities or new /enhanced program development. These activities are expected to benefit the scholar(s), their respective departments, and graduate studies in general at CWU. Release time is awarded in the academic year, and a stipend of up to $5,000 is awarded for the summer quarter.

Eligibility
Any CWU faculty member who is employed on a full-time, continuing academic year appointment at the rank of assistant professor or higher may apply for the award. Faculty can apply annually, however, priority will be given to those who have not been awarded from the FDRC within the last 2 years. It is expected that the faculty member shall remain at CWU for one academic year following completion of the release time.

General Information

You are required to upload one scanned pdf in the online application submission form. The documentation (one PDF) should contain the following information:

Release time for Research or Creative Activity

Release time for New Program Development

RESEARCH OR CREATIVE ACTIVITY

1)      Typed abstract or creative artistic statement of the project (not to exceed 200 words).

2)      Typed project description of  8 pages or less (double spaced, 12-point font) that includes the following sections:

  • Project goals and objectives
  • Relationship to previous research/knowledge or creative activity in the filed - literature review - including relationship to previous work
  • Significance of the research/project
  •  Clear statement of methodology/research design or creative approach
  • Timeline of research/creative activity for successful completion of the project
  • Anticipated results or artistic achievement
  • Cited literature or References (not included in 8 page limitation)
  • Extramural Potential: This should be an assessment of the potential for research proposals to lead to funding (grants) and/or dissemination (publications, exhibitions, performances) outside of CWU. Provide information such as anticipated funding source or dissemination venue, contacts with those sources as applicable, and likelihood for success. If portions of the project are already being funded by other agencies, either inside or outside CWU, detail those sources here
  • Cited Literature or references (not included in the 8 page limitation)

Appendix:

  1. VITAE: attach curriculum vitae or resume (up to 2 pages; single-sided) emphasizing appropriate research, scholarly, or artistic achievements.
  2. If applicable, include letter of approval for human or animal subjects’ clearance and for standard operating procedures involving the handling of dangerous animals, equipment, or materials. If approval is pending, check the ‘pending’ option on the online submission form.

NEW PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT

1)      Typed summary statement of the program, specilization or certificate to be proposed (not to exceed exceed 500 words).

2)      Typed project description of 4 pages or less (double spaced, 12-point font) that includes the following labeled sections:

  • State the proposed degree / certificate title and why a Faculty Release Appointment is necessary in order to accomplish the proposal
  • Program Description and Rationale
  • Provide an overview of the proposed program and its goals
  • Describe the state, regional and national demand for the program
  • Provide any available data that demonstrates student and employer demand

3)     Describe the role of each additional team member (if applicable)
