What classes do you teach, and if possible what quarters are they usually taught in?

I typically teach MGT 483 Organizational Change, MGT 395 Leadership, and MGT 489 Strategic Management. Leadership is available to all students, and it is my favorite class to teach.

What is your specialty within your department?

My leadership classes are focused on creating leaders.

What is something that most people do not know about you?

I was a first-generation college student, and graduate, in my family. I was a non-traditional-age student, and I put myself through college.

Tell us about an interesting hobby

I have a large organic vegetable garden. I grow and can most of the food my family eats in a year.

Where was the most interesting place you have visited?

I have visited many interesting places, though the one that is most important to me was saving enough to go to England when I was 23 years old (before college). No one in my family had traveled outside of the US since my father came back from WWII. I have been to England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Czech Republic, Italy, Netherlands, Iceland, Canada, Mexico, and I lived in the Caribbean for a year on the island of Grenada.

Describe your teaching style

My style is to show up however I am most useful to you. My goal is for you to get what you want and need from my classes.

If you could learn any language, what would it be and why?

Spanish so I could be available to people in the US who speak Spanish. I am so impressed with anyone who moves to a new country, and I would like to show up for those who come to the US.

What pets do you have?

Four cats and a dog. I have a busy house.

What gives current graduates an ‘edge’ in the current job market?

The confidence to jump in and figure it out, whatever it is. Know that you got this because you got this.

What are you most proud of accomplishing?

My coach training. It has changed my life and the lives of everyone I coach for the better.

Dr. Claudia Dumitrescu (or Dr. D, as her students like to call her) has more than 10 years of experience in both the academic and business worlds. She worked for several years providing legal and business consulting for various companies in Romania and Greece. Dr. D. holds a M.S. in Agribusiness (2008) and received her Ph.D. in Business Administration (2013) from Arizona State University (ASU).

During her graduate studies at ASU, she worked as a Graduate Research Associate and served as President of the Arizona Professional Chapter of the National Agri-Marketing Association. Before her arrival at Central Washington University (CWU), Dr. D. was an Assistant Professor of Marketing at Whitworth University, Spokane WA. In  her Assistant Professor of Marketing position at CWU, Dr. D. enjoys educating  her students about marketing and its role to the global society and preparing the future business leaders who are equipped with strong interpersonal, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills and contribute to society through socially responsible behavior.

Dr. D.’s research interests lie in the area of consumer behavior, with an emphasis on consumer policy and corporate social responsibility. She is also interested in macromarketing and cross-cultural marketing in developing countries. Dr. D. is dedicated to conduct research that sheds light on today’s marketing issues facing the business world, consumers, and society at large.

In her own words (October 2018):   I'm originally from Connecticut and have lived in 7 states including Hawaii.  I've been teaching at Central for about 22 years:  Business Law, Advanced Business Law, Sports Law and a class in Negotiations, Arbitrations and Mediation.

What is something that most people do not know about you? - I think of myself as an introvert in settings where I don't know people.

Tell us about an interesting hobby - I love to cook and bake, it’s my creative outlet.

If you could learn any language, what would it be and why? – Gaelic, I love the accent.

What do you think is the key to academic success? - Hard work and organization.

Provide a useful interview tip - Wear something you feel good in so you are as relaxed as possible.   Interviewing is a stressful environment and making yourself feel comfortable will allow you to interview more effectively.

What pets do you have? - I have a 7 year old  ‘Borador’, named KONA -  ¼ Border Collie and ¾  chocolate Labrador, and a  3 year old ‘Gordondor’ named SHADOW -  ½  Gordon Setter and ½  Labrador.  

What gives current graduates an ‘edge’ in today’s job market?  Internships and real world experience definitely help to provide an ‘edge’, but also being willing to take on extra work, show up on time or early, complete tasks in a timely manner and challenge your own abilities.

Tim Hargrave teaches and does research in the areas of strategic management, business ethics, sustainable business, and the role of business in society. He teaches MGT 382 (Principles of Management), MGT 389 (Business & Society), MGT 489 (Strategic Management), BUS 389 (Sustainable Business), and ACCT 560 (Accounting Ethics and Governance). Prof. Hargrave’s research has been published in Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Business Ethics Quarterly, Organization Science, and other top journals.

Dr. Hargrave earned his Ph.D. in Strategic Management and Organization from the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management. He also holds an MBA and a Master’s degree in Energy & Resources from the University of California at Berkeley.

Prior to becoming to academe, Dr. Hargrave worked in Washington D.C. on global climate change policy. He started his career in accounting and finance.

In his words:

I have offices on the Lynnwood and Des Moines campuses and teach primarily online. I really like and admire CWU students. I am constantly amazed by how hard-working and determined so many of you are!

My wife Karen and I have three children, ages 16 to 24. Raising three great kids is definitely the greatest achievement of my life. In our family we love reading, hiking, watching movies, and eating Thai, Indian, Mediterranean, Mexican, and other delicious foods together. We also love traveling. I lived in Wales as a kid and have also visited Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Our family’s most consuming passion is soccer. I played college soccer at Cal, and we all play and enjoy going to Seattle Sounders’ games. My favorite teams are the Sounders and FC Barcelona.

Fun fact: Every day, I do the Wordle, Worldle, Globle, and Factle.

In her words (May 2013):  My name is Erica Holley, and I'm a new management professor at CWU-Lynnwood. I completed my PhD at the University of Washington in 2012, and I currently teach Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management at Lynnwood, Des Moines, and Ellensburg.

What is something that most people do not know about you?

One rather unusual fact about me is that I also have a passion for creative writing and have published a young adult fiction novel called "Duncan, Son of Sagira." It's a legendary tale about a world of cats filled with ancient magic, purebred guards, and dangerous feral clans.

Tell us about an interesting hobby

I love playing indoor soccer, and I've been a goalkeeper since I was in third grade!

What is something unique that you have discovered in your research?

One of my favorite research projects is on understanding how employees react to interpersonal events where they believe they received either too much or too little credibility for the information they communicated to others (e.g. perceived credibility received for the advice given to a supervisor during decision making) (Holley, Johnson, & Jensen). Specifically, our research has found that having a perceived credibility deficit is associated with decreased job satisfaction and increased turnover intentions and deviant behavior.

Where was the most interesting place you have visited?

I recently took a trip to Iceland, and I was in awe of the dramatic landscape!

Describe your teaching style

I really focus on building connections between the real world and the concepts within the class. In order to do that, I try to draw connections to pop culture, media, politics, and student experiences through fun cases, videos, and exercises.

If you could learn any language, what would it be and why?

I would love to learn Spanish. I think it is a beautiful language, and my grandmother was born in Mexico and could speak it fluently.

What do you think is the key to academic success?

Wow, what a question! I think being driven to learn and grow combined with a desire to never stop pursuing new goals is crucial to success in anything, not just academia.

Provide a useful interview tip

Demonstrate how you "fit" with the organization's goals and values. Companies want employees that have the KSAs necessary to succeed AND they want a personality match with their organizational culture.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Teaching, writing, and mentoring. I hope to have expanded my family by then as well (both furry and human members).

What are a few of your career goals?

I would love to continue publishing in top tier journals and be recognized for excellence in both teaching and research at CWU.

What successful business person do you consider a role model?

I am always impressed by people like Bill Gates that strive to have a positive impact on the world when they could just as easily sit around doing nothing.

What pets do you have?

Duncan & Whiski (two very spoiled shelter cats). I am a huge adoption advocate.

What gives current graduates an ‘edge’ in the current job market?

Find ways to distinguish yourself through job experiences that enhance your education. Your resume needs to pop.

Describe your dream vacation

I love Europe, and I'd love to spend more time there seeing new places that I've never been to.

What are you most proud of accomplishing?

This is a REALLY hard question. I think it is a tie between finishing my PhD and writing my first novel.

What are you currently reading?

Game of Thrones. I just finished and I'm in withdrawal.

Don't feel boxed into a stereotype when it comes to your career. I really struggled with this as an undergraduate because I was passionate about so many different things but nothing fit neatly into one box. Find a way to pursue all your passions. That "divided attention" won't hurt you. It will only make you more versatile, energized, and most importantly, balanced!

In her words (January 2013): Hello Students and Alumni. I joined Central in July 2012 as the new dean of the College of Business. Before coming to Ellensburg, I lived in NJ--my home state--for 10 years. I've also lived in the Washington DC area for 10 years and the St. Louis area for 11 years. You can see a pattern here--10 year chapters! I also am a professor of management. I haven't had the opportunity to teach at CWU yet, but when I do, my areas are Strategic Management and International Business.

I am the mother of 2 daughters, Sarah (20, studying at NYU) and Maureen (18, high school senior), and we have 2 cats (Skylar and Sammy) and 1 dog (Belle).

I recently was married to my high school sweetheart--we were reunited after 30+ years. I will keep my maiden name (Martell) in my professional life, but use my husband's last name (Littel) socially.

We've been asked to select a few questions to answer, and these are the ones that I have chosen:

What do you think is the key to academic success?

Hard work--no doubt about it! You need to approach school as you would a serious job, and consistently apply yourself. Every week go to class, read the book, review your notes, and allow plenty of time for assignments.

Provide a useful interview tip

Preparation is key. Know all you can about the company, and be prepared to link your experience and education to company needs. Prepare some good questions. Look completely professional; you should have a suit you just wear for interviews and plan to spend at least $250 on your suit.What gives current graduates an ‘edge’ in today’s job market?

Internships

Students should place a high priority on working as interns, even if it requires financial sacrifice. It's an investment in your future. Good grades are also important in interviewing for your first job as many companies have a policy not to interview students without above a 3.0 or 3.5.

Dr. Mark P. Pritchard serves as professor of Marketing in the College of Business at Central Washington University. Having earned his Ph.D. from the University of Oregon, Dr. Pritchard was the founding Director of the NWCSB and has held faculty appointments in marketing in Canada, Australia, Singapore, France and the United States. His research concentrates on issues in services marketing and specializes in the area of brand loyalty and repeat purchase behavior in the sport and tourism industries. Recent research and instructional interests have focused on the formation of personal ethics in business and the important role social responsibility in shaping a winning brand.
