El Centro Latino & Latin American Studies Program

Poster for scholarship event featuring Dr. Gilberto Garcia

El Centro Latino and Latin American Studies Program (El Centro) combines an interdisciplinary academic program with a community partnership initiative to engage CWU and the surrounding community to increase understanding of Latino and Latin American experiences, history, cultures, and contributions.

Emphasizing student success, study abroad, and community-based research, the LLAS minor fuses the fields of Latino Studies and Latin American Studies, allowing students to develop a course of study based on their interests and needs. Our community partnership initiative and annual series of sponsored cultural events enhance the academic program to solidify and expand the relationship between CWU and the surrounding community, especially Washington State's booming Latino populations.

Ultimately, El Centro seeks to create a physical and intellectual space where university and community members can find mutual understanding, intellectual stimulation, and personal and professional enrichment. We focus on supporting students academically, personally, socially, and culturally for our current students.

We have a variety of summer classes offered online! All of these can fulfill LLAS minor requirements and more.

El Centro office space is at the Diversity & Equity Center in Black Hall 101.Director of Latino & Latin American Studies Doctora Christina Torres Garcia
