Office of Extended and Global Education Statement on Anti-Asian Violence

The Office of Extended and Global Education has issued a statement in response to the acts of harassment and violence against members of the Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander communities. The text of the statement follows:

The Office of Extended and Global Education at Central Washington University (CWU) is committed to our institutional values of diversity, equality, and inclusion. Over the last year, we have witnessed with great sadness and horror acts of harassment and violence against members of the Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities around the United States and globally. These acts have increased in frequency since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and have taken a variety of forms including the use of racial slurs, discriminatory behaviors, and physical attacks. We denounce racism, xenophobia, and nativism. We urge all members of the CWU community to stand in solidarity with all international and minority students, faculty, staff, and our broader community members.

If any member of our Asian, Asian American, Pacific Islander, or international student communities have experienced any acts of harassment or bias we want to know as part of our efforts to continue to foster a safe and welcoming environment. We encourage you to use any of the following resources:

  • Report the incident through the completion and submission of the Incident Reporting Form
  • The Diversity and Equity Center welcomes conversation and is available to offer support alongside additional resources. They can be reached at diversity@cwu.edu.
  • Student Counseling Services is offering Teletherapy services through phone or secure video chat. Call +1-509-963-1391 to schedule an appointment or to receive more information.
  • The Equity & Services Council (ESC) is comprised of 8 student organizations that create safe spaces for specific historically marginalized communities but also welcome allies to listen and learn. Find more information about how to get involved with ESC organization here: https://cwu.presence.io/
  • The Office of International Studies and Programs intlprog@cwu.edu or visit https://www.cwu.edu/international-programs/contact-oisp

In Solidarity,
Office of Extended and Global Education
