In Memoriam Henry Foster 2000-2021

The Central Washington University community is mourning the loss of Henry Foster, who passed away Saturday, May 22, 2021.
Henry joined CWU in fall 2018 as an international student from Elsham, England. Henry played for the CWU Men’s Rugby team and was majoring in Safety and Health Management. Henry was a bright, motivated student and his passing is a great loss to Central and the Department of Engineering Technologies, Safety and Construction (ETSC).

“I was shocked and devastated to hear the news about the passing of Henry. It was so sudden, and my heart aches,” said Sathy Rajendran, ETSC Department Chair and faculty advisor to Henry. “I first met Henry on February 27, 2020, for an advising meeting, when he discussed his interest in the occupational safety and health program at CWU. He impressed me with his preparation, respect, and professionalism. He knew what he was doing; he had a clear vision and a strategy to achieve it. Henry was in two of my classes, and he was so impressive. He was going to be an excellent safety professional and the profession has lost a future leader.”

“I have met with Henry many times as his advisor. We often talked about what it is like being an international student, given my own experience. He loved and respected his parents, often would say that he discussed his plans with them. I last met with Henry on May 3, discussing his summer internship with an excellent company. He was so excited and eager for it. I feel sad and cannot believe he is not with us. I will miss him. I am keeping his family in my thoughts and prayers, and my deepest condolences to his family and friends.”

Henry was one of 350 current international students at CWU, who bring their diversity of thought, culture, and experiences to enrich our campus and community. The International Student & Scholar Services team was thrilled to welcome Henry to CWU and into the international student community. Henry had a positive spirit and energy and was a joyful presence on campus.

International student advisor, Roz Moes, said “Henry was a talented young man who always wore a friendly smile. One time I passed him on campus surrounded by a group of guys. He could have easily just kept walking but was so sweet to stop and say hello to his advisor. He touched a lot of lives and will be greatly missed.”

The news of Henry’s passing is heartbreaking. Warmest thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to Henry’s family, Sean, Joanne and Fran, his friends, rugby teammates, CWU students and classmates, and the countless number of people throughout the world whom he has impacted.
