This major allows students to examine mental, emotional, developmental, and physical disorders through multiple social science lenses, such as psychology, sociology, IDS, law and justice, and cultural studies. Students will be able to prepare themselves for a profession and graduate studies by completing this degree.

For students interested in counseling and social work related to issues of drug abuse and dependency and who desire a holistic foundation in this topic, the IDS-Social Sciences Substance Abuse track could be a beneficial option. This major allows students to examine issues of drug pharmacology, the physiological and psychological processes of dependence, social and economic impacts of dependence, cultural and historical views on drugs, the effectiveness of different types of treatment, as well as developing counseling skills. This major is supported by courses in anthropology, health education, history, IDS, law and justice, psychology, public health, and sociology.

Students interested in a career in public service through government or the non-profit sector will find that this track offers a choice of classes that promote balanced learning between the formal structure of government and the more flexible nature of non-profit advocacy. This major allows students to examine the inner-workings of government, including the legislative process, the development of public policy, provisions of public health services, etc…, as well as an opportunity to explore roles and careers in the public service sector and gain a better understanding of the roles advocates play in the support of marginalized communities and populations. This major allows students to examine how social sciences can add value to all facets of running successful businesses: leadership; day-to-day operations, such as finance and human resources; understanding consumers, markets and regulations; strategic planning and risk analysis; and others.  Multiple disciplines inform this degree, such as psychology, economics, sociology, IDS, and political science. For students who are still figuring out what they want to be when they grow up, this IDS-Social Sciences degree track provides ample meaningful and enriching opportunities for exploration. Students will be able to choose from multiple special topics IDS courses in which they will develop an appreciation for how social sciences interact to address a variety of issues such as personal and community wellness, mental health treatment, misunderstandings, deviant behavior, and even alien abduction.
