Required Training
CWU has a zero-tolerance position on all forms of discrimination, harassment, and other inappropriate workplace behavior. In order to highlight the importance of this, the University's stance is that all university employees partake in mandatory trainings, which includes student employees.
The training courses below are required (CWU Policy 2-30-260).
- Treating People with Dignity and Respect (1 hour, 20 min to 1 hour, 40 min)
Description: This course will take a deeper look at prevention strategies and provide information about building a more positive and respectful workplace.
When to Take
- Once every three years
Where to Find
- Search for and launch Treating People under the |Learning| tab in MyCWU (1 hour, 20 minutes for non-supervising employees; 1 hour, 40 minutes for supervisors).
- Emergency Preparedness (30 min-1.5 hours, depending on mode of instruction)
Description: In this course, you'll learn about ways to prepare and respond to emergencies and disasters. You'll also be introduced to the best ways to respond to specific natural and manmade emergencies and disasters.
When to Take
- Once every two years

- FERPA (1 hour)
Description: The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) outlines the rights of students and their families with respect to the confidentiality of and access to education records kept by institutions. This course will provide employees of postsecondary educational institutions awareness-level training on their responsibilities and obligations under FERPA.
When to Take
- For those who have access to student records, take every year

Currently two options for participating:

- Search for Understanding Ferpa under the |Learning| tab in MyCWU. Launch the Web-based Training session (1 hour).
- Ethics in Public Service (1 hour)
Description: This course provides a basic understanding of the ethical standards in place for state employees and officials. It covers what is required as a state employee under Ethics in Public Service law (RCW 42.52) and corresponding rules (WAC 292).
When to Take
- Once every three years

- Safety Short: Coronaviruses and COVID-19 (33 min)
Description: In this course, you'll learn what COVID-19 is, who is at the highest risk of contracting it, how it's transmitted, signs and symptoms, and precautions you should take to prevent and treat it.
When to Take
- Due upon hire

- Hazard Communication: An Employee's Right to Understand 2.0 (23 min)
Description: This course will acquaint you with the precautions that both you and your employer must take in order to safely use, handle, and store hazardous chemicals in the workplace.
When to Take
- Due upon hire for who will be on campus.

- Faculty Onboarding Online Course (45 min)
Description: This onboarding course is to welcome new faculty, help them acclimate to the work environment at CWU, and provide them with the necessary resources and information they need to start contributing to the mission of CWU.
When to Take
- First day of employment

- Additional for Academic Department Chairs
Description: This online course provides information you need to know regarding your role as an academic department chair. You will learn about your responsibilities as a supervisor, mandatory reporting, performance management, dealing with conflict, progressive discipline, understanding the landscape at CWU, and supervisor resources.
When to Take
- Within your first 30 days of becoming a Chair who supervises employees
Where to Find
- Search for and launch CWU Supervisor Quick Start Course under the |Learning| tab in MyCWU and complete (30 min).
- Leadership Foundation Certificate
Employees, including faculty members, appointed to supervisor or management positions must successfully complete entry-level supervisory or managerial training within six (6) months of the date of appointment to a supervisor or manager position.
The entry-level supervisory or managerial training requirement may be accomplished by earning the Leadership Foundation Certificate.
When to Complete
- Within 6 months of becoming a supervisor
How to Satisfy Requirement
- Search for and launch CWU Supervisor Quick Start Course under the |Learning| tab in MyCWU and complete (30 min) - within first 30 days.
- Attend Emotional Intelligence for CWU Supervisors (16 hours) - offered every quarter.
- Search for EI for Supervisors under the |Learning| tab in MyCWU. Register for the Classroom session (2 hours weekly for entire month = 8 hours in-class time).
- Complete a CWU Supervisor Journey in CLA Online (Percipio):
- Click on the link below to select one of the three Leadership Journeys to complete. Choices include:
- Once you’ve completed training, fill out the Leadership Foundation Certificate Completion Form.
- Student Employment Onboarding Course (1 hour)
