Dr. Karen Culcasi visits CWU

From May 7th to May 9th, the Department of Geography hosted special guest Dr. Karen Culcasi from West Virginia University. Dr. Culcasi came to Central under the auspices of the Visiting Geographical Scientist Program of the American Association of Geographers with funding provided by Gamma Theta Upsilon (the national honorary society of the geography), the Social Justice & Human Rights Dialogue, the Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies Program, and the Douglas Honors College. While here, Karen visited several classes at CWU and Yakima Valley College, had meals with students and faculty, and gave a public lecture. Dr. Culcasi’s areas of expertise include gender and conflict, migration and refugees, critical cartography and the politics of representation, and the Middle East. Her public lecture was titled “Struggles & Resilience: The Everyday Lives of Syrian Women Refugees in Jordan”.
