CWU Game On! combines the excitement of sports and the secret language of computer coding to create a unique opportunity for middle- and high school students.

Microsoft Corporation, Central Washington University, the Yakima, Mabton, Wahluke and Ellensburg school districts, and the Henry Beauchamp Community Center are partners in this unique after-school venture that teaches leadership, social and digital literacy, and college-ready skills. 

Through the program, Microsoft shares its computer coding expertise and delivers lessons in a fun, engaging way in an effort to appeal to students of all ages and skill levels.Inspiring Programs in STEM Award logo

CWU staff and students mentor coaches and student participants and coordinate Game On! program sessions twice a week. Students learn coding for an hour and sharpen their leadership skills for 90 minutes through sports activities. CWU sponsors visits to the university campus to welcome students into a friendly educational future.

There’s no cost to students to participate. They just have to sign up and be part of the team!

FACT SHEET

CWU Game On! is a partnership between Microsoft Corporation, Central Washington University, the Yakima, Mabton, Wahluke, and Ellensburg School Districts, and the Henry Beauchamp Community Center that combines computer science education with sports to promote youth leadership and computer coding skills.

This unique after-school program is the first of its kind on the West Coast.

Students learn leadership, social and digital literacy, and college-ready skills, while paving their pathway to higher education.

CWU coordinates Game On! sessions twice a week. Students learn coding for an hour and sharpen their leadership skills for 90 minutes via several sports activities. CWU sponsors visits to the university campus to welcome students into a friendly educational future.

Microsoft YouthSpark - As technology has become an integral part of people’s daily lives, Microsoft is committed to ensuring that that all youth have the opportunity to learn computer science, a foundational subject that prepares students with the computational-thinking and problem-solving skills necessary for success in an increasingly digital world. Through its YouthSpark initiative, Microsoft provides content and resources, both original and by partners such as Code.org, enabling students to have their first programming experience.


Central Washington University - Student success is the focus and measure of everything we do. CWU seeks to empower youth by providing academic services and mentoring that allows students to believe they can succeed in college. CWU’s Center for Leadership and Community Engagement coordinates the Youth Innovation and Leadership Program, ensuring coaching is based on the Real Madrid Foundation’s leadership development methods and ensuring the skilled delivery of YouthSpark curriculum.


Yakima, Mabton, Wahluke & Ellensburg School Districts; Henry Beauchamp Community Center

- Middle and high schools in central Washington share the goals of leadership development and academic enrichment. The Yakima School District has partnered with, CWU, Real Madrid Foundation, and Microsoft for this project, which engages students twice per week, with coding instruction occurring as part of the school day, and soccer/core value training after school. There is no cost to students to participate in the program.
