Highlights from World Languages Day 2019

The World Languages & Cultures Department

We put on another successful World Language's Day on Friday May 17th, 2019. Eleven schools from all over Washington state came to enjoy presentations and festivities held throughout the day. Five of those schools joined World Languages Day with generous support from CWU GEAR UP program. This major recruiting event reached over 400 students who got to explore and indulge in different cultures, cuisines, and languages from around the world. Students were able to choose from over twenty presentations, workshops, and performances that celebrate global cultures and languages. World Languages & Cultures students tabled at the event, sharing a glimpse with high school and junior high students into life as a student in the World Languages & Cultures Department at CWU.

Just a few highlights from a fun-packed day include a French marionette puppetry workshop; mini college lectures on topics ranging from French Hip Hop to the Japanese writing system; American Sign Language poetry performances; a ballet folklórico dance workshop; and Russian Dance lessons. These activities got students out of their seats and involved in learning about global cultures. Central Washington University Russian major, Dalia Ruiz, participated in the Russian Dance lessons and said the following about her experience:

“I walked into the Russian Dance lessons and was glad to see students participating in the activity! It was fun todance around with so many people, especially a foreign dance. The instructor was loud and energetic, she was not going to let anyone just sit around which kept us involved and made it extra fun! The steps were easy to follow and thoroughly explained. I loved how this class got us out of our comfort zones while having a fun time.”

We’d like to thank all the performers, presenters, faculty & students for volunteering and helping make this the best World Languages Day yet! - "The Office of World Languages and Cultures"
