Bechtel Group Foundation Scholarship awarded to SHM student

April 16, 2012

ELLENSBURG, Wash. -- Derrick Christensen, a student in Central Washington University's Safety and Health Management (SHM) program, has been selected to receive a $5,000 Bechtel Group Foundation Scholarship for Safety and Health.

The Bechtel scholarships are given annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Foundation to only three undergraduate students nationwide, who plan to pursue careers in construction safety and health. Recipients must have at least 3.0 grade point average (GPA), be recommended by a safety faculty member, and be a member of ASSE.

Christensen is currently the vice president for the ASSE student section at CWU. His duties include being a liaison for industry guest speakers, helping SHM students find internships, and recruiting for the SHM program. He holds a 3.9 GPA, is currently in the Washington Army National Guard, and works with the Kittitas County Veterans Coalition.

In June, Christensen will officially receive his scholarship during the ASSE annual convention in Boulder, Colorado.

The SHM program prepares students to be well-rounded safety practitioners in a wide variety of industries such as construction, civil engineering, and manufacturing. CWU's SHM program is one of only two, four-year bachelor's degree programs in the western United States. Its students enjoy a 100 percent employment rate after graduation.
