This essay is the most important part of your application; the Application Review Committee will use it to gain a better understanding of you as a person. Please use it as an opportunity to demonstrate not just your ability to write well, but to demonstrate your critical thinking ability.

A well-written essay has demonstrated mastery in the following three areas:

Mechanics of Writing: Writer demonstrated mastery with the mechanics of writing: spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization.

Sentence & Paragraph Structure: Writer demonstrated mastery with sentence and paragraph fluency and use of transitional words and phrases throughout the writing.

Development of Ideas: Writer demonstrated mastery with development of ideas: prompt was properly addressed, critical thought was present, the writing was coherent, & specific examples were used.

Essay Prompt

The motto of the William O. Douglas Honors College is sapere aude (dare to be wise). Who is the wisest person you know or know of? Please describe what it is about them that makes them wise through examples of their wisdom and its influence on your life.

The minimum essay length is 500 words. Please double space your essay.
