PULSE "Redefining Rape" Article

Central Washington University's student-run lifestyle magazine, PULSE, has been nominated for two prestigious Pacemaker Awards from the Associated College Press for best magazine and best online site.

PULSE was one of 41 collegiate magazines nationwide to be nominated in the feature/general interest division of the Magazine Pacemaker, and also one of 41 selected as a finalist for the Online PacemakerBoth categories we're nominated in submissions from all colleges of all sizes, and the online category was among websites for all broadcast, newspaper, and magazine sites, not just magazine.

According to CWU digital journalism professors, Pacemakers are considered the top prize in the field of college journalism.

The winners will be announced at the upcoming National College Media Convention, held October 31 to November 3 in Washington, DC.

PULSE is created as part of a practicum course in the Digital Journalism program of Central's communication department. The issue nominated for the Magazine Pacemaker is the Fall 2018 Issue 2 with a cover story on "Redefining Rape" written by former Editor-in-Chief Bailee Wicks with photos by Zahn Schultz and designs and illustrations by Isabelle Grotting.

"The students at PULSE dedicate innumerable hours of work, thought and creativity to put out a magazine that people will want to pick up off newsstands, and they succeed through a combination of light and hard-hitting stories, original photography and singular designs," said Jennifer Green, digital journalism senior lecturer and PULSE faculty adviser.

Digital journalism alumna Wicks added: “It’s an honor to be a finalist in multiple categories up against huge schools nationwide. It shows that the work my team and I did last year meant something to our CWU community and others across the country.”

The student creative director on the nominated issue was Matthew Conrardy and Schultz director of photography.PULSE Cover Fall 2018

"It is incredible to see the progress in not only the magazine but in the staff morale as a result," said Madeline Wilson, current PULSE editor-in-chief. "Much of our Fall 2019 staff is new, so it is uplifting and motivating for students to see how their work can make an impact."

Last year, PULSE was named "Best of Show" for first place Feature Magazine at the Associated College Press 2019 Midwinter Convention in La Jolla, California.

Student work for PULSEalso recently brought home regional “Mark of Excellence” awards from the Society of Professional Journalists for Best Use of Multimedia (Winner), Best Photo Illustration (Finalist), and Best Affiliated Website (Finalist).
